The sustainability and profitability of the industry is being threatened by ageing infrastructure and the continual threat of cheaper sugar imports

Southey Contracting has a long history working on sugar mills and the company will continue to work with its clients to extend the lives of the 14 SA mills to keep the industry competitive. Southey has used its geographic network to offer services to the sugar companies that are expanding into East and West African countries, including Swaziland, Mozambique, Malawi, Tanzania, Nigeria, Sierra Leone and Ivory Coast.

The SA government’s support for renewable energy projects and new technologies for production of bio-fuels such as ethanol, have created new opportunity for sugar milling companies. Co-generation facilities using bio-mass are being established by sugar companies. Work on construction of the new facilities, plant shuts and on-going project work and maintenance work all provide opportunities for Southey Contracting.
